X-Prize contender, Zero Pollution Motors is nearing production with its compressed air engine.  The first cars are scheduled to hit the roads of the United States by 2010.  The cost to fill the vehicles air tanks is roughly around $2.00 in energy and with that you'll be able to travel about 120 miles.

Using compressed air as an energy source presents some exciting solutions to common alternative fuel concerns.  For one, it air is all around us and a compressor is not a difficult thing for existing refueling station to install.  Second, the time to refuel the vehicle is drastically reduced (2-3 minutes) verses other energy sources such as batteries (usually 4 hours).

Check out the videos below for further details and to see the vehicle in action.

The Australian-produced “Beyond Tomorrow” episode on the Compressed Air Car has been madly popular on YouTube. We know we are on the right track and answering a worldwide need when we see these numbers. Watch this video to see footage of the Compressed Air Car Prototype on the road, the Nice development facility and MDI CEO and inventor Guy Negre.
Discovery Channel traveled to Nice, France to interview the Compressed Air Car inventor, Guy Negre. The 8-minute segment includes interviews, clips of the prototype on the road, and explanations and animations of Negre’s compressed air technology.
The Science Channel also visited MDI in Nice and produced a segment that takes a closer look at the engine and how the air tanks are refilled with air.
